
For thousands of years, yogis practised Trataka meditation because they observed its effects firsthand. They noticed that a wandering mind gradually became steady, emotional reactions softened, meditation deepened, and awareness became sharper.
Today, advances in neuroscience and psychology are beginning to explain why. Although scientists may not use terms like Prana, Dharana, or Ajna Chakra, many of the changes described in ancient yogic texts correspond remarkably well with what researchers know about attention, perception, neuroplasticity, and the autonomic nervous system.
Rather than viewing Trataka as mystical or magical, modern science increasingly sees it as a structured exercise that repeatedly trains the brain’s attention networks.
The Key to Trataka Meditation : Eyes- A Window Into the Brain
Most of us think of the eyes as cameras that simply capture images. In reality, vision is an active process. Nearly one-third of the human cerebral cortex is involved in processing visual information. Every second, your eyes perform rapid movements called saccades, scanning the environment and sending enormous amounts of information to the brain. These movements are essential for survival. They help us identify faces, read text, avoid obstacles, and respond to changing situations.
However, constant eye movement is also closely linked with constant shifts in attention. When the eyes jump from one object to another, the brain repeatedly redirects its processing resources. In today’s digital world—filled with scrolling feeds, flashing advertisements, and endless notifications—our visual system is bombarded with stimulation. Trataka interrupts this cycle.
Instead of allowing the eyes to wander, you intentionally hold them still. This simple act reduces unnecessary visual exploration and encourages the brain to remain focused on a single target. Over time, this may strengthen the neural circuits responsible for sustained attention.
The Eyes: A Window Into the Brain
Imagine trying to lift a heavy weight on your first day in the gym. You probably wouldn’t succeed. But if you train consistently, the muscles gradually become stronger. Attention works in much the same way. Every time you notice your mind drifting and gently bring your attention back to the chosen object, you’re exercising the brain’s ability to sustain focus.
Psychologists call this Focused Attention Training. Instead of fighting distractions, you repeatedly return to a single point of concentration. This repeated process strengthens executive control—the brain’s ability to choose where attention should remain despite competing distractions. This is one reason Trataka is often recommended for students, professionals, meditators, and anyone who feels mentally scattered.
Neuroplasticity: The Brain Learns What We Repeatedly Practise
One of the most exciting discoveries in neuroscience is neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to reorganize itself throughout life. Every repeated behaviour strengthens certain neural pathways while allowing unused pathways to weaken. The following is the best analogy cited by numerous psychologists. Think of walking across a grassy field. The first time, there’s no visible path. Walk the same route every day, and eventually a clear trail appears. The brain works in a similar way.
If we repeatedly practise distraction, impulsive phone checking, and constant multitasking, those habits become increasingly automatic. If we repeatedly practise calm, sustained attention through Trataka, the brain gradually becomes more efficient at maintaining focus. In other words, we become better at what we repeatedly do.
The Brain’s Attention Networks
Neuroscientists describe several interconnected attention systems within the brain. Although Trataka has not been studied as extensively as mindfulness meditation, its characteristics suggest that it engages many of these same networks. During Trataka, the brain must:-
Select one object from the surrounding environment.
Ignore competing distractions.
Resist the urge to blink or look away.
Detect when attention wanders.
Bring attention back without frustration.
These seemingly simple actions require cooperation between multiple brain regions involved in attention, self-control, and decision-making. With regular practice, these networks may become more efficient, making it easier to concentrate in everyday life.
The Parasympathetic Nervous System: Shifting Into Calm
Have you ever noticed how your breathing slows naturally when you’re deeply absorbed in something peaceful? Trataka often produces a similar effect. As the body becomes still and the gaze steadies, breathing tends to become slower and more regular. This can encourage activation of the parasympathetic nervous system, often called the “rest-and-digest” system.
When this system becomes more active:
Heart rate slows.
Muscles begin to relax.
Stress hormones decrease.
Digestion improves.
The body shifts away from constant alertness.
For many people living with chronic stress, this shift alone can feel profoundly calming. It helps explain why practitioners often report feeling mentally refreshed after only a few minutes of Trataka.
Why Tears Are Not a Bad Sign
One of the first things beginners notice is that their eyes begin to water. Many assume they’re doing something wrong. In reality, mild tearing is expected during traditional Trataka practice. Blinking normally spreads tears across the surface of the eye. When blinking is reduced temporarily, the eyes respond by producing more tears to keep themselves lubricated. These tears also help wash away dust and tiny particles from the eye’s surface. However, Trataka should never cause sharp pain, burning, or prolonged discomfort. If it does, the practice should be stopped and modified. The goal is gentle discipline—not force.
Can Trataka Improve Memory?
Indirectly, yes. Memory depends heavily on attention. If information never receives your full attention, it is less likely to be stored effectively in the brain. By strengthening sustained attention, Trataka may improve your ability to absorb, organize, and recall information. This is one reason many yoga teachers have traditionally recommended the practice for students preparing for examinations. Rather than acting as a “memory booster,” Trataka improves one of the foundations upon which memory depends.
Beyond Concentration
The greatest benefit of Trataka may not be sharper attention alone. It is the cultivation of awareness. As you continue practising, you begin noticing subtle changes:
You become aware of the urge to blink before acting on it.
You notice distracting thoughts without immediately following them.
You recognise emotional reactions as they arise instead of becoming overwhelmed by them.
This growing awareness gradually extends beyond meditation. You may become more patient during conversations, less reactive during stressful situations, and more present in everyday life. In this sense, Trataka is not simply about looking at an object. It is about learning to observe the mind itself. And that may be its most transformative lesson.

The Stroop test is a simple psychological test used to measure how well your brain can control attention and ignore distractions.
Simple example
Imagine the words are:
🔴 BLUE
🟢 RED
🔵 GREEN
The word BLUE is written in red ink.
Your brain automatically wants to read the word, but the task may ask you to say the colour of the ink instead.
So you have to suppress the automatic response (“BLUE”) and give the correct response (“RED”).
That’s called the Stroop effect.
What does it test?
Mainly:
- Selective attention — focusing on the relevant information
- Inhibitory control — suppressing an automatic response
- Cognitive flexibility — switching between competing pieces of information
- Processing speed
One caution: A Stroop improvement doesn’t prove that Trataka “rewires the brain.” It simply indicates better performance on a particular measure of attention/control.
